Sound proofing that doesn’t look like an old mattress nailed to a wall.
From Born Rich:

With its integrated and invisible sound absorbers, it offers an effective solution to acoustic problem caused by “contemporary” and sound-reflecting materials such as glass, marble and concrete. This efficient solution is framed by an extremely lightweight aluminum construction which is covered with a printed textile skin on the front and back.

The Advertising Artwork of Dr. Seuss

Before there was Cat in the Hat and other ultra popular tales, Dr. Seuss a.k.a Theodore Seuss Geisel, survived the Great Depression creating advertising illustrations. Although he worked for some of the biggest corporate clients such as General Electric or Standard Oil, he still managed to infuse every ad with his imaginative and quirky style. The Mandeville Special Collections Library at University of Califronia San Diego has a great collection of his advertising work. Who would have thought such mundane products like car oil could be so entertaining?

Before Theodore Seuss Geisel found fame as a children’s book author, the primary outlet for his creative efforts was magazines. His first steady job after he left Oxford was as a cartoonist for Judge, a New York City publication. In 1927 one of these cartoons opened the way to a more profitable career, as well as greater public exposure, as an advertising illustrator. This fortuitous cartoon depicts a medieval knight in his bed, facing a dragon who had invaded his room, and lamenting, “Darn it all, another dragon. And just after I’d sprayed the whole castle with Flit” (a well-known brand of bug spray).

According to an anecdote in Judith and Neil Morgan’s book Dr. Seuss and Mr. Geisel (Random House, 1995), the wife of the ad executive who handled the Standard Oil company’s account saw the cartoon. At her urging, her husband hired the artist, thereby inaugurating a 17-year campaign of ads whose recurring plea, “Quick, Henry, the Flit!,” became a common catchphrase. These ads, along with those for several other companies, supported the Geisels throughout the Great Depression and the nascent period of his writing career.

Have Money, Louvre Will Travel

Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates, is going to shell out a mere 400 million euros ($524m) to basically use the Louvre name to build its own museum and borrow some of its famous art pieces.

I can see why many people aren’t particularly crazy over the deal,
but hey, 400 million euros could actually help out a lot struggling
artists in France. I mean give them a break, if they can’t even smoke
their Gauloises in public places anymore, at least send some cash their
way.

Link: From BBC News:.

The controversy is not over public spending on culture -
French taxpayers think nothing of subsidising films to the tune of 500m
euros a year ($700m; £350m).

The row centres on the fact that France stands to make money from the deal, which was signed in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.

A good deal of money, in fact. Abu Dhabi - the capital of the United
Arab Emirates - will pay hundreds of millions of euros over 30 years
for the privilege of displaying works from French museums.

The oil-rich emirate will pay 400 million euros ($524m; £272m) just
for the Louvre name. The first payment, 150m euros, will be made within
a month, according to the French news agency AFP.

Artcoustic Speakers: Make Your Plasma TV Happy

So you’ve just bought yourself a swanky new plasma screen, why not buy some speakers that can do it justice? Although many speakers tend to sacrifice looks for performance, Artcoustic is well known for delivering the goods on both fronts. This company, founded by former Bang & Olufsen designers, offers a wide range of speakers with a very thin profile, suitable for mounting on a wall. Buyers can select from the company’s selection of artwork or patterned fabrics which adorn the speaker grilles. You can even submit your own work which will be applied to the model of your choice.
